Grohmann Knives Limited is a small family business with a big reputation.

It is an Old World story that began before the second World War, when a commercial buyer from Quebec traveled once a year to a factory in Sudetenland, then a German region of Czechoslovakia, to buy pocket knives. Every year the buyer would urge Rudolph Grohmann the production manager at a plant in Mikulasovice (Nixdorf), to come to Canada , promising him help to get started. Mr. Grohmann would always decline as he was happy in his own country, but after the war, the political situation grew desperate and in 1949 Rudolph Grohmann accepted the offer. Rudolph's daughter Berta married Michael Babinec Sr who was from RudnonadHrohom. Within a year, Grohmann and his family arrived in Nova Scotia at the invitation of the provincial government-funded Pictou Cutlery.

Here they worked along with approximately 30 other people. While Pictou Cutlery was in operation, an Arkansas knife company CASE was hired to assist with one large order of 200,000 pcs of folders. However, the Nova Scotia government closed the business after three years and sold off all the machinery. Mr Grohmann and Mr Babinec Sr then went to work at Trenton Steel making Canon shells for the Korean War and then to Fairy Aviation in Shearwater machining airplane parts amongst other jobs. Mr. Grohmann however was determined in his trade to make knives, and built a garage workshop to begin producing and engraving folding knives designed by himself.

STEEL MATERIALS

Grohmann takes pride in their products and that means using high quality materials. Grohmann's most popular stainless steel in the outdoor fixed blade knives are fashioned from German high carbon stainless, such as 4110, which is somewhat comparable to the USA 440 series. We maintain a 56-58 degree rockwell hardness on all outdoor knives. This steel has withstood the test of time due to its ease of resharpening and long lasting edge holding ability.

The other choice for the fixed outdoor blades is a German carbon steel which is made from a C70-type european carbon steel for the carbon-lovers out there. As any quality steel goes, stainless or carbon, all knives should be kept cleaned and oiled to prevent rusting, but especially in the carbon steel knives. They tend to hold an edge longer and sharpen up faster than the stainless, but they will corrode if not kept cleaned and oiled at all times when not in use. When carbon knives leave the Grohmann factory, the blades are oiled with non-toxic mineral oil and wrapped in wax paper to preserve the blades. Carbon will corrode if not kept cleaned and oiled, this is the nature of the beast, so be sure to wash your knives after use, dry and apply a light oil. Even stain "less" knives can corrode if not kept cleaned and oiled as there is a high content of carbon in them as well.

he high carbon stainless steel used in the Kitchen Knives range throughout the different lines, providing a Good Quality ,Better Quality and Best Quality. Rockwell 54-56 hardness is maintained across the Kitchen Knife lines.

Grohmann Kitchen Knives are made with the Classic Rosewood, Black Polypropylene, or Xtraresinwood handles.
